Frequently Asked Questions

Do you program hearing aids that are purchase online?

No, we do not program hearing aids purchased online. At Doctors of Hearing, we select devices tailored to your hearing loss, lifestyle, and needs—choosing the right type, receiver, dome or custom fit, and considering dexterity, vision, memory, and tinnitus management. All devices come directly from manufacturers for quality, reliability, and proper warranties, ensuring personalized care—not just a product.

Hearing aids require much more than a simple setup. Proper care includes in-person programming, real-ear measurements or speech mapping, patient education, family counseling, device orientation, and hands-on practice. They also benefit from ongoing follow-up, adjustments, software updates, reprogramming, repairs, and support with assistive devices.

We also provide professional cleanings, troubleshooting, performance checks, in-office repairs, and pairing with phones or other devices. These essential services aren’t included with online purchases. Working with a professional ensures full support and long-term results—your hearing, not just the device, is our priority.

What services do you offer?

We offer comprehensive hearing and vestibular evaluations, hearing aid consultations, fittings and adjustments, tinnitus management and support, and ongoing hearing care for adults and teen-agers. Our focus is on delivering personalized, long-term hearing solutions rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Do I need a referral to book an appointment for a hearing test or a balance test?

For diagnostic testing the answer is usually yes! Specifically if you are going through your insurance. We would need a prescription, referral, or prior authorization for the requested services for billing purposes. If you have been referred from a physician or specialist, we’re happy to coordinate your care. If you are seeking care without insurance no referral is required. You’re welcome to book directly with us.

What happens during a hearing test?

A hearing evaluation is painless and usually takes about 60 minutes. During the appointment, we’ll discuss your hearing concerns, examine your ears, and complete a series of tests. These include a brief ear pressure test to check for medical problems in the middle ear, and a comprehensive hearing test to measure sound sensitivity and speech understanding. We also assess inner ear function to determine whether any hearing loss is permanent. At the end of the visit, we’ll clearly explain your results and review the next steps together.

How do I know if I need a hearing test?

You may benefit from a hearing test if you notice difficulty understanding speech, especially in background noise, frequently ask others to repeat themselves, experience ringing in your ears, or feel your hearing has changed over time. Even if you’re unsure, a baseline test is a great place to start.

Do you work with hearing aids from multiple manufacturers?

Yes. We work with a range of trusted hearing aid manufacturers so we can recommend solutions based on your hearing needs, lifestyle, and budget — not a single brand.

Are hearing aids expensive?

Hearing aid costs vary depending on whether you choose current or older technology levels, as well as the model, features, and any available insurance coverage. We’ll verify your insurance benefits and review pricing clearly and upfront, helping you select an option that fits both your hearing needs and your budget. There is never any pressure—our hearing aid evaluations are designed to be educational sessions, not sales pitches.

Do you offer hearing aid repairs and adjustments?

Yes. We provide hearing aid cleanings, adjustments, troubleshooting, and many in-office repairs. If a device needs to be sent to the manufacturer, we’ll take care of that process for you.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept many insurance plans and may be in network with your provider. You’re welcome to reach out to us before your visit so we can verify your plan and review your coverage details. We also recommend contacting your insurance company beforehand to confirm your coverage and request a reference number, as benefits can vary widely. During an appointment, we’ll help you understand your hearing benefits.

Do you treat tinnitus (ringing in the ears)?

Yes. We offer tinnitus evaluations and management strategies that may include education, sound therapy, counseling, support, and hearing technology when appropriate.

How often should my hearing be checked?

For most adults, a hearing test every 1–2 years is recommended, or sooner if you notice changes. If you already wear hearing aids, regular hearing aid follow-up appointments help ensure you’re hearing your best.

How do I schedule an appointment?

You can schedule by calling our any of our three offices. If you have questions before booking, we’re always happy to help.
